Diaspora Conference 09 Jan 2019

Embassy of India

The Embassy of India, Berlin strives to be the ‘Home Away from Home’ for the Indian Diaspora in Germany. The Embassy, along with the three Consulates in Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg works with the Indian Community and remains in constant touch with the Indian Diaspora through multiple touch points. As part of its determination towards the Diaspora, the Embassy organised the flagship event of its Diaspora outreach: the 3rd Annual Diaspora Conference on January 09, 2019 (On Pravasi Bharatiya Divas-the day on which Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa).

The Conference was hosted at the Embassy and saw participation of Pravasi Bharatiyas from across Germany. Ambassador Mukta Dutta Tomar, in her speech, welcomed the participants to the Embassy, their second home in Germany, and emphasised the role of the Indian Diaspora in building an important cultural bridge between India and Germany and contributing to the growth momentum in relations. The key note address was given by Pravasi Bharatiya Award winner Prof. Dr. Victor Smetacek. Panel Discussions were also conducted on the two-pronged theme of the Conference-Role of Diaspora in Building New India and Role of Youth in building bridges between India and Germany. A video was shown about the upcoming Pravasi Bharatiya Convention to be held in Varanasi on January 21. The rendition of Gandhiji’s favourite Bhajan:”Vaishava Jana Toh” was also played and the evening ended with distribution of prizes and cultural performances.
