BHARATANATYAM IN CONTEMPORARY DANCE
Contemporary Indian Dance Solo Performances of JDDC members
Carmen Romero
Sara Mikolai
Giorgia Minisini
Johanna Devi
The Johanna Devi Dance Company consists of six dancers and one choreographer. Four of them are going to share the stage to show their own choreographic works. The movement material of all dance pieces is influenced by Bharatanatyam and contemporary dance techniques. Each dancer has her unique approach and story of how and why they came across Indian classical dance or contemporary western dance. The Solos are linked through the influence of a movement language that they all worked on and deepened in their training with Johanna Devi.
Four solos will be shown that deal with topics such as the influence of Indian dance in Spanish culture, the aspect of the five elements, transforming and deconstructing an ancient tradition and reflecting on personal experiences while confronted with different dance techniques.
The Company has been working with Giorgia Minisini since October 2011 for the production \'Santosham\' (shown at Rathaus Schöneberg, Sophiensaele and the Indian Embassy in 2011/2012) and with Carmen Romero and Sara Mikolai since April 2012 for the theatre-production \'Bernarda Alba\'s House\' by Lorca that toured to Iraq and won the prize for the \'Best Production\' at the 17th International Theatre Festival, Baghdad in May 2013.
Johanna Devi was trained in contemporary dance and ballet at Jessica Iwanson, Munich, Germany and has been studying the classical Indian dance form Bharatanatyam, concluding with the ‘arangetram’ in 2006 in Berlin under Rajyashree Ramesh. She has danced for companies like Felix Ruckert, Sampradaya Dance Creations, Mavin Khoo, Sadhana Dance, Gwyn Emberton Dance and has created Solo and Company work as a choreographer. In 2012 she founded the Johanna Devi Dance Company in Berlin, Germany.
Sarai Mikolai received her Bharata Natyam dance training at Abinaya Tharpana Dance School, Berlin and completed her Arangetram in 2005. She has been performing classical and contemporary work Germany, Austria, England and Sri Lanka. Sara has been a dancer for Johanna Devi Dance Company since April 2012.
Giorgia Minisiniobtained a First Class degree in Contemporary Dance from The Place in London and later moved to New York to complete her studies with the Trisha Brown Dance Company.
