Odissi is a classical dance of India originating from Orissa. The history of this dance goes back to the third century B.C. There are many dance sculptures pertaining to this dance in Bhuvaneshwar and Konark temples.
Sonali Mishra was born and raised in the United States. She was initiated into Odissi dance by Smt. Chitralekha, Smt. Ellora, and Sri Devraj Patnaik in Toronto. Since 1995, she has been travelling regularly to Orissa for further study and refinement. Sonali received her initial training in India under Gurus Sri Bichitrananda Swain and Sri Ramesh Chandra Jena, with additional guidance from Smt. Aruna Mohanty and Smt. Nandita Behera. Her desire to further understand the intricacies of the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra gharana led her to Srjan, the institute founded by this legendary Guru, where she has been undergoing rigorous training under Smt. Sujata Mohapatra.
Sonali has performed in numerous venues and festivals in the US, Canada, India, Spain, Austria, the UK, and Malaysia. Her commitments to artistic excellence, combined with her dedication to cultivating intellectual discourses in the field of Odissi, have carved a unique niche for her in the dance field. Her rare combination of Eastern sensibilities and Western education allow her to successfully cross social and cultural barriers to make Odissi more accessible globally. Sonali can easily be considered a “Global Ambassador” of Odissi dance.

Odissiist ein klassischer indischer Tanz und stammt aus Orissa. Die Geschichte dieses Tanzes geht zurück bis in das dritte Jahrhundert vor Christus. Es gibt viele Skulpturen im Zusammenhang mit diesem Tanz in den Tempeln von Bhuvaneshwar und Konark.
Sonali Mishra ist in den Vereinigten Staaten geboren und aufgewachsen. Sie wurde in den Odissi-Tanz von Frau Chitralekha, Frau Ellora und Herrn Devraj Patnaik in Toronto eingeführt. Seit 1995 reist sie regelmäßig nach Orissa, um weitere Feinheiten des Tanzes zu erlernen. Sonali erhielt ihre Grundausbildung in Indien bei Guru Sri Bichitrananda Swain und Sri Ramesh Chandra Jena, daneben bei Frau Aruna Mohanty und Frau Nandita Behera. Ihr Wunsch, die Feinheiten des Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra – Stiles weiter zu verstehen, führte sie zu Srjan, dem Institut dieses legendären Gurus, wo sie eine strenge Ausbildung unter Frau Sujata Mohapatra durchlief.
Sonali hat auf zahlreichen Veranstaltungsorten und Festivals in den USA, Kanada, Indien, Spanien, Österreich, Großbritannien und Malaysia getanzt. Ihre Verpflichtungen zur künstlerischen Exzellenz, gepaart mit ihrem Engagement für geistige Diskurse im Odissi, haben eine einzigartige Nische für sie geschaffen. Ihre seltene Kombination aus östlicher Sensibilität und westlicher Ausbildung erlauben ihr, soziale und kulturelle Barrieren zu durchbrechen und Odissi global zugänglicher zu machen. Sonali kann durchaus als eine "weltweite Botschafterin" des Odissi-Tanzes bezeichnet werden.
