Late Roland Beer, one of the greatest friends of India in Germany, dedicated his life to strengthen the Indo-German cultural exchange.
Born in 1938 in Munich, he started studying Sanskrit philology and history of old Indian literature at the Jena University from 1958 on. During the sixties to eighties, he was engaged as lecturer and research assistant at Jena and Humboldt University (Berlin) and as editor of Kiepenheuer publishing Weimar and Leipzig.
In 1991, Mr Roland Beer founded his own publishing house ‘Lotos Verlag’ – entirely dedicated to Indian literature. Here, he brought out German versions of books from India and about India – innumerable Indian classics and eminent modern authors.
Roland Beer also supported Indo-German theatre co-productions, including the immensely fruitful cooperation between Fritz Bennewitz and Vijaya Mehta.
In 2000, he has been awarded the prestigious Gisela-Bonn Award.
