Papia Das Baul and Sebastian Dreyer, representing two different forms of musical traditions of India, come to a meeting point at the Tagore Cultural Centre Berlin, where classical Indian sitar celebrates the spirit of the bauls and ancient baul music mingles with the sweet melodies of sitar. 

Bengal since ages has been a hot bed of arts, a culturally vibrant region and home to numerous musicians, poets and painters. This evening will witness the spirit of Bengali culture with some of its finest art in it's most authentic forms.

Since today’s West Bengal is a major centre of classical raga music the first part of the programme will host a raga recital by sitarist Sebastian Dreyer. He will present traditional Hindustani melodies that carry the spirit of Bengali classical and folk traditions.

In the second part of the concert Papia Das Baul & Ensemble will present traditional baul music of West Bengal & Bangladesh. Papia will also perform her popular baul songs, which she has written and composed. Besides traditional Baul and Sufi melodies Papia will sing Jhumur songs which are lesser known out of their Bengali homeland. The songs are deeply rooted in the districts of Birbhum, Bankura and Purulia, and for this evening will carry the smell of the soil of the remote villages and the tribal belts to the German capital. Papia‘s voice will be accompanied by Pavel Kaššai on tabla and madol, Sebastian Dreyer on sitar and dotara and Ravi Srinivasan on tabla.

Papia Das Baul, based in both India and Europe, is an internationally prominent artist, poet and Baul singer. As a unique versatile personality, she is a brand name in poetry and painting with her signature name Papia Ghoshal. Besides, being a graduate in Indian Classical Vocal Music, Papia Das Baul has spent more than twenty years with the Bauls and the fakirs of rural Bengal, practicing and performing music and sadhana.

Sebastian Dreyer is one of few European instrumentalists who picked up Indian Raga music in its traditional form. He learned the art of playing sitar in Berlin, Jaipur and Kolkata. His musical training started under the tutelage of Smt. Gisela Tarwitt, since 2003 Sebastian is studying with Partha Chatterjee. Besides, he had complementary classes with renowned sitar artists and vocalists.

Ravi Srinivasan was born in Singapore. He performs for more than 30 years worldwide as a percussionist and vocalist, both solo and with Soname Yangchen, Indigo Masala, Dotschy Reinhardt and Ioanna Srinivasan. He worked for the Berliner Philharmonie, Islenska Operan, Nationaltheater Mannheim, Theater Freiburg, Thalia Theatre Hamburg, National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai, RadioTV Malaysia, Doordarshan Kolkata, film director Christoph Schlingensief and has accompanied countless virtuosos of Indian classical music. This year Ravi is presenting his new solo album „Haven“ with concerts in Europe and Asia.

Pavel Kassai joined Papia Das Baul in 2009 in her Bohemian baul ashram in Prague and had been a regular visitor to Indian villages along with Papia to learn and understand the path of the bauls, playing folk baul rhythm instruments. He is doing classical tabla from Bengal Music College, Kolkata since past few years.

Papia Das Baul und Sebastian Dreyer, die zwei verschiedene musikalische Traditionen Indiens repräsentieren, begegnen sich in der Indischen Botschaft in Berlin: klassische indische Sitar-Musik zelebriert die Tradition der Bauls, und die ehrwürdige Baul-Musik feiert mit den singenden Klängen der Sitar.

Bengalen ist seit jeher eine Geburtsstätte der Künste, eine kulturell pulsierende Region, die Heimat zahlreicher Musiker, Dichter und Maler. Dieser Abend wird den Geist der bengalischen Kultur mit einigen seiner musikalischen Genres feiern.

Da das heutige Westbengalen ein wichtiges Zentrum der klassischen Raga-Musik ist, wird das Programm mit einer Raga-Interpretation des Sitaristen Sebastian Dreyer eingeleitet werden. Dieser Konzertteil mit traditionellen nordindischen Melodien wird inspiriert sein von klassischen und ländlichen Musiktraditionen Bengalens.

Im zweiten Teil des Konzerts werden Papia Das Baul & Ensemble folkloristische Melodien präsentieren. Neben den traditionellen Liedern der Bauls und Sufis wird Papia Lieder des Jhumur-Genres singen, die außerhalb ihrer bengalischen Heimat weitestgehend noch unbekannt sind. Sie sind in den Regionen Birbhum, Bankura und Purulia verwurzelt und tragen an diesem Abend den Geruch des Bodens der bengalischen Dörfer und Stammesgebiete nach Berlin. Papias Gesang wird musikalisch begleitet von Pavel Kaššai an bengalischer Perkussion, Sebastian Dreyer auf Sitar und Dotara und Ravi Srinivasan an der Tabla.

Papia Das Baul, in Indien und Europa lebend, ist eine international anerkannte Künstlerin, Dichterin und Baul-Sängerin. Als einzigartige, vielseitige Persönlichkeit, hat ist sich auf den Gebieten der Dichtung und Malerei unter ihrem Geburtsnamen Namen Papia Ghoshal bekannt. Papia Das Baul hat ein Diplom in indischer klassischer Vokalmusik und verbrachte mehr als zwanzig Jahren mit den Bauls und Fakiren des ländlichen Bengalen, um deren Musik und spirituelle Disziplinen zu praktizieren.

Neben dem Konzert wird auf der Bühne auch eine Auswahl der neusten Gemäldeserie 'Ektara Sitar Sangam' von Papia Das Baul zu sehen sein. Ihre jüngsten Werke feiern die göttliche Verschmelzung zweier uralter musikalischer Traditionen: der nordindischen Raga-Musik und der Baul-Tradition. Ihre neuen Arbeiten thematisieren auch die musikalische und spirituelle Reise auf dem Pfad der Bauls und Sufis.

Sebastian Dreyer ist einer der wenigen europäischen Instrumentalisten, die sich der indischen Raga-Musik in ihrer traditionellen Form widmen. Seine Ragainterpretationen sind erzählerisch und entführen das Publikum auf packende Klangreisen. Er lernte die Kunst des Sitarspiels in Berlin, Jaipur und Kolkata, seine musikalische Ausbildung begann unter der Leitung von Gisela Tarwitt. Seit 2003 lernt er von Partha Chatterjee. Zudem hatte er ergänzenden Unterricht bei namhaften Sitaristen und Sängern.

Ravi Srinivasan ist ein in Singapore geborener gefragter Tabla-Virtuose, Perkussionist und Sänger, er ist weltweit unterwegs, u.a. mit Soname Yangchen, Indigo Masala, Dotschy Reinhardt, Music Ensemble of Benares und Ioanna Srinivasan. Als Komponist und Solist arbeitete er für Islenska Operan, Nationaltheater Mannheim, Theater Freiburg, Thalia-theater Hamburg, NCPA Mumbai RTM Malaysia, Doordarshan Kolkata und begleitete viele namhafte indische Künstler, u.a. Asad Khan, Pandit Jasraj und Pandit Vijay Shankar. Momentan präsentiert er seine neue Solo-CD „Haven“ mit Konzerten in Europa und Asien.

Pavel Kassai schloss sich Papia Das Baul im Jahre 2009 in ihrem Baul-Ashram in Prag an und bereist seitdem regelmäßig die indischen Dörfer mit Papia, um den Weg der Bauls zu verstehen und spielen die Rhythmusinstrumente der Bauls zu erlernen. Seit einigen Jahren studiert er auch das klassische Tabla-Spiel am Bengal Music College in Kolkata.
