Ambassador’s meeting with Journalists in Berlin on Indian Elections
Journalists from the Group Journalists.network - an organisation of journalists from leading media organisations in Germany and abroad; and Indo- German Media Network, the alumni association of India Germany Media Ambassador’s Program - visited Embassy of India, Berlin on March 27, 2019 for a discussion on the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 with the Ambassador of India to Germany, Mrs. Mukta Dutta Tomar.
In her opening remarks, Ambassador Tomar explained the historical context of the Indian elections, timeline of the 17 th Lok Sabha polls, differences between the Indian and the German systems, use of recent technologies like EVMs and various measures taken by ECI to ensure free and fair elections in India and how Elections in India represent and celebrate the diverse and yet united aspirations of the people and the Republic of India.
The scale and the complexity of the elections generated many follow up questions from the participating journalists, including challenges faced by the Election Commission during the exercise, use of social media (especially Whatsapp) by various political parties in election campaign and important issues in the upcoming elections
Journalists.network has been organising professional exchanges between German and international media since 1995.Journalists from leading German, Austrian and Swiss media agencies would be undertaking a visit to India in April 2019, where they would get a chance to witness at least one phase of the Indian elections.
