The North Indian dance form of Kathak is inextricably bound with classical Hindustani music, and the rhythmic nimbleness of the feet is accompanied by the tabla or pakhawaj. Traditionally the stories were of Radha and Krishna. The dance was taken to Muslim courts and thus it became more entertaining and less religious in content. More emphasis was laid on Nritta, the pure dance aspect and less on Abhinaya (expression and emotion).

“Mother says I was a dancer before I could walk…” - this line of the famous ABBA song proves true for Lokeshwari Dasgupta. Dance is in her blood as she calls her self lucky to be the daughter and also dance disciple of the famous Dance Exponent Guru Surangama Dasgupta. This inherent desire to dance became the sole motto of Lokeshwari’s life by the able guidance and inspiration of her mother. Her aim is to propagate the rich cultural heritage of Indian Classical Dances everywhere through innovative and inspiring creations. Lokeshwari completed Graduation level in both Kathak and Rabindranritya (Tagore Dance). She also learnt Manipuri (North Eastern Indian Classical Dance) and Bharatnatyam (South Indian Classical Dance) under the able guidance of P.T. Narendran (Kalakshetra, Chennai). Lokeshwari completed Graduation and Post Graduation in History from Jadavpur University and M. Phil. in Women Studies from Jadavpur University. Her dissertation is titled, Re-Telling Kathak: a Journey through Court, Celluloid and the Contemporary Stage.

Die Nordindische Tanzform Kathak ist untrennbar mit der klassischen Hindustani-Musik verbunden, wobei die rhythmischen Bewegungen der Füße von Tabla oder Pakhawaj begleitet wird. Traditionell wurden Geschichten von Radha und Krishna wiedergegeben. Der Tanz wurde später an muslimischen Gerichten als Unterhaltung aufgeführt und wurde weniger religiös. Mehr Wert wurde auf Nritta, dem reinen Tanz, und weniger auf Abhinaya (Ausdruck und Emotion) gelegt.

Tanz ist in ihrem Blut, sie ist die Tochter und auch Tanz-Schüler der berühmten Tänzerin Guru Surangama Dasgupta. Tanz wurde zum alleinigen Ziel in Lokeshwari’s Leben, um das reiche kulturelle Erbe der klassischen indischen Tänze durch innovative und inspirierende Kreationen zu verbreiten. Lokeshwari hat schulische Abschlüsse in Kathak und Rabindranritya (Tagore-Tanz). Sie lernte auch Manipuri (klassischen Tanz aus dem Nordosten Indiens) und Bharatnatyam (Südindischen klassischen Tanz) unter der kompetenten Leitung von Pt. Narendran (Kalakshetra, Chennai). Lokeshwari hat daneben Sudienabschlüsse in Geschichte und Women Studies. Ihre Dissertation trägt den Titel, Neu-Erzählung des Kathak: eine Reise durch Gerichte, Celluloid und Zeitgenössische Bühne.
