The Sitar has been popularized in Germany and Europe especially with the beginning 70’s of the last century. It has been Pandit Ravi Shankar, who made the instrument and its typical sound known in the West - he played during the legendary Woodstock Festival and strongly influenced musicians like George Harrison, Yehudi Menuhin or the Rolling Stones. Paying tribute to Pandit Ravi Shankar and his efforts to make the Sitar and the Indian classical music known in the West, the First Berlin Sitar Music Festival takes place nearly one year after the Maestro’s demise.

The Festival will open with a lecture demonstration by Prof. Subroto Roy Chowdhury.
Prof. Chowdhury has established himself since 1964 in India and Europe as a serious performing musician, musicologist, and teacher. His career took him all over India and Europe. He made numerous recordings for Indian and European labels. As a teacher and academician, he has been intimately associated with the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and the Rabindra Bharati University in India, the Dartington College of Arts in the U.K., the Tiroler Kultur-Service in Germany, and as a Music Critic for The Statesmen, the leading English daily from Calcutta. Prof. Subroto Roy Chowdhury is a modern musician, equally comfortable with difficult and rare Hindustani ragas such as Shree, Kamod and Bhairav, on one hand, and experimental encounters with jazz musicians on the other.

Die Sitar wurde in Deutschland und Europa besonders seit den 1970er Jahren populär. Es war Pandit Ravi Shankar, der dieses Instrument mit dem besonderen Klang in der westlichen Welt bekannt machte - er spielte es auf dem legendären Woodstock Festival und beeinflusste Musiker wie George Harrison, Yehudi Menuhin oder auch die Rolling Stones. Als Hommage an Pandit Ravi Shankar und seine Bemühungen, die Sitar und die klassische indische Musik bekannt zu machen, findet das Erste Berliner Sitar Musik Festival statt - ein knappes Jahr nach dem Ableben des legendären Meisters.

Das Festival wird mit einem musikalischen Prolog von Prof. Subroto Roy Chowdhury eröffnet. Prof. Chowdhury hat sich seit 1964 in Indien und Europa als Musiker, Musikwissenschaftler und Lehrer etabliert. Seine Karriere führte ihn durch ganz Indien und Europa. Er hat zahlreiche Aufnahmen für indische und europäische Labels veröffentlicht. Als Lehrer und Akademiker ist er eng mit der Bharatiya Vidya- und Rabindra Bharati Universität, mit dem Dartington College of Arts in Großbritannien und dem Tiroler Kulturdienst verbunden. Prof. Subroto Roy Chowdhury ist ein moderner Musiker - gleichermaßen vertraut mit schwierigen und seltenen indischen Ragas wie Shree, Kamod und Bhairav, wie auch mit experimentellen Begegnungen in der Jazzmusik.
