The Sitar has been popularized in Germany and Europe especially with the beginning 70’s of the last century. It has been Pandit Ravi Shankar, who made the instrument and its typical sound known in the West - he played during the legendary Woodstock Festival and strongly influenced musicians like George Harrison, Yehudi Menuhin or the Rolling Stones. Paying tribute to Pandit Ravi Shankar and his efforts to make the Sitar and the Indian classical music known in the West, the First Berlin Sitar Music Festival takes place nearly one year after the Maestro’s demise.
The finale of the First Berlin Sitar Music Festival is an experiment, which musically combines two absolutely different music systems. The very fact that, ever since Bach, the ‘well-tempered scale’ (West) has been juxtaposed to the ‘natural scale’ (East) seems incompatible. The confrontation of these disparate musical and philosophical dimensions results in a concert programme for sitar and 5-string cello where arrangements based on harmonics and modal compositions and passages with an improvisatory flavour – Raga (melodic elements) and Tala (rhythm) – are woven into an intense sound experience. Rhythmic structures, microtonal experiments and ‘sound baths’ blend together into a correspondence ‘between the worlds’. It is the intention of the Avant-Rag Duo to combine Indian classical music with western music traditions – feeding in baroque, jazz and avant-garde influences.

Die Sitar wurde in Deutschland und Europa besonders seit den 1970er Jahren populär. Es war Pandit Ravi Shankar, der dieses Instrument mit dem besonderen Klang in der westlichen Welt bekannt machte - er spielte es auf dem legendären Woodstock Festival und beeinflusste Musiker wie George Harrison, Yehudi Menuhin oder auch die Rolling Stones. Als Hommage an Pandit Ravi Shankar und seine Bemühungen, die Sitar und die klassische indische Musik bekannt zu machen, findet das Erste Berliner Sitar Musik Festival statt - ein knappes Jahr nach dem Ableben des legendären Meisters.

Das Finale des Ersten Berliner Sitar Musik Festival ist ein Experiment, welches zwei völlig verschiedene Musik-Systeme vereinen soll. Der Versuch, Bach’s "wohltemperiertes Klavier" (West) mit der "natürlichen Skala" (Ost) auf Sitar und Cello zusammenzubringen. Raga (Melodie) und Tala (Rhythmus) werden zu einem intensiven Klangerlebnis, welches rhythmische Strukturen, mikrotonale Experimente und \'Sound Bäder\' zu einer Korrespondenz "zwischen den Welten" verweben. Es ist die Absicht des Duos Avant-Rag, klassische indische Musik mit westlichen Musiktraditionen zu kombinieren – mit Barock, Jazz und Avantgarde-Einflüssen.
