Ranjana Dave

Ranjana Dave is an Odissi dancer and dance writer based in Mumbai, India. She has been trained in Odissi dance by Jhelum Paranjape and Kumkum Lal and performed in festivals across India, winning honours and awards like Odissi Jyoti and Odissi Prativa. Ranjana Dave holds a postgraduate degree from the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, where her focus was performance studies. She is the co-founder and artistic director of Dance Dialogues, a platform for the dance community to collaborate, reflect and explore ideas that inform their creative practice in multi-disciplinary ways. She writes on dance for prominent Indian publications like Time Out magazine, The Hindu, Asian Age and has worked on curating an online archive of dance video. She is an Arthink Southasia Fellow this year, working at Uferstudios in Berlin towards strengthening her skills in arts management.

Maugdha is a fleeting glimpse of the wondrous women who populate the imagination of dance. The nayikas (heroines) in classical dance are complex beings – at times passionate, at times reticent, and always brimming with sparkling wit. In the same breath, they can be epitomes of grace and fury, of beauty and of what is grotesque. Maugdha explores the stories and thoughts of these nayikas through the rich choreographic legacy of Kelucharan Mohapatra.

Ranjana Dave ist eine Odissi-Tänzerin und Autorin aus Mumbai, Indien. Sie hat den Odissi-Tanzstil von Jhelum Paranjape und Kumkum Lal gelernt. Mit ihrer Teilnahme an Festivals in Indien gewann sie zahlreiche Ehrungen und Auszeichnungen. Ranjana Dave ist Studentin der School of Arts and Aesthetics der Jawaharlal Nehru Universität in New Delhi. Daneben ist sie Mitbegründerin und künstlerische Leiterin der Tanz-Dialoge - einer Plattform der Tanzszene, in der Ideen reflektiert und erforscht werden und in kreative Praxis umgesetzt werden. Sie schreibt über Tanz für bekannte Magazine wie Time Out, The Hindu oder Asian Age und arbeitet in diesem Jahr bei den Uferstudios in Berlin, um ihre Fähigkeiten in Kulturmanagement auszubauen.

Maugdha ist ein flüchtiger Blick auf die wunderbaren Frauen, die die Phantasie des Tanzes beleben. Die nayikas (Heldinnen) im indischen klassischen Tanz sind komplexe Wesen - mal leidenschaftlich, mal zurückhaltend und immer randvoll mit Witz. Im gleichen Atemzug kann sie Inbegriff von Anmut und Wut sein. Maugdha untersucht die Geschichten und Gedanken dieser nayikas mit Hilfe der Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten des reichen choreografischen Erbes von Kelucharan Mohapatra.
