Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest and most widely practiced classical dance forms of India. Geometric visuals based on the distinctive half-sitting stance or aramandi, an enticing array of eye-movements and a variety of hand gestures are brought together to invoke in the audience the rasa (or experience) of pure delight. Bharathanatyam, like other Indian classical dance forms, has the unique aspect of Abhinaya - the art of expression, through which the dancer narrates incidents or situations picked from a wide variety of contexts from mythology to history, folklore to contemporary themes, and portrays characters traversing the entire milieu of human emotions. Originating in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Bharatanatyam uses Carnatic Music as its musical and lyrical canvas.
Dr. Apoorva Jayaraman was trained in Bharatanatyam by Smt Priyadarsini Govind in Chennai (India). Born and raised in Bangalore, her initial training in dance was by Smt Padmini Ravi. She thereafter had specialised training in abhinaya from Padmabhushan Smt Kalanidhi Narayanan.
Apoorva meanwhile is a prominent soloist, earning recognition and acclaim around the globe. She has performed at many prestigious occasions and venues in India and has toured USA, UK, Italy and Germany - giving performances, workshops and lecture-demonstrations.
Through her diverse experiences, Apoorva has nurtured a deep-rooted passion for the classical arts, which led her to establish the Cambridge University Indian Classical Arts Society (CUICAS) — a platform for young artists in Cambridge (UK) to share their passion for the classical arts, and as a medium to raise awareness about Indian performing Arts in Cambridge. She was invited to design, conceptualise and convene the Inaugural Annual Dance Conference by Trinity Arts Festival of India in December 2017, which was lauded as a pioneering effort in the field of Bharatanatyam.
Apoorva has explored her flair for choreography, and has created and performed in cross-style performances alongside Kathak and Odissi artists.
Apoorva is also an astrophysicist with a PhD in Astronomy from the University of Cambridge and a Masters degree in Physics from University of Oxford

Apoorva ist mittlerweile eine angesehene Solistin, die Anerkennung und Ehrung rund um den Globus erfährt. Sie trat bei vielen prestigeträchtigen Anlässen und Veranstaltungsorten in Indien auf und tourte durch die USA, Großbritannien, Italien und Deutschland - mit Auftritten, Workshops und Vorträgen.
Durch ihre vielfältigen Erfahrungen hat Apoorva eine tief verwurzelte Leidenschaft für die klassischen Künste entwickelt, die dazu geführt hat, dass sie die Cambridge University Indian Classical Arts Society (CUICAS) gegründet hat - eine Plattform für junge Künstler in Cambridge zur Erfahrbarmachung indischer darstellender Künste.
Apoorva wurde eingeladen, die Eröffnungsgala der Annual Dance Conference des Trinity Arts Festival of India im Dezember 2017 zu konzipieren, was als Pionierleistung im Bereich Bharatanatyam gelobt wurde. Sie hat ein Gespür für Choreografie entwickelt und ist in Cross-Style-Auftritten mit Kathak- und Odissi-Künstlern aufgetreten.
Apoorva ist auch Astrophysikerin mit einem Doktortitel in Astronomie von der Universität Cambridge und einem Master-Abschluss in Physik von der Universität Oxford.
